At Wyoming Valley Junior Spartans Youth Football & Cheerleading, the safety and well-being of our players and cheerleaders is our top priority. We are committed to creating a safe, supportive, and fun environment where every participant can grow both physically and mentally while minimizing risks of injury. Below are the key steps we take to ensure our players stay safe and healthy throughout the season.
Certified Coaching Staff
Our coaches undergo extensive training and certification. This ensures that they are equipped with the knowledge and skills to teach proper techniques and foster a safe environment for all players and cheerleaders. Up-to-date background checks and clearances are obtained and kept on file for all coaches and staff in accordance with applicable laws.
Proper Equipment
We provide top-quality helmets, pads, and protective gear that meet the latest safety standards. All equipment is regularly inspected and maintained to ensure it provides the highest level of protection. Players are also instructed on how to wear and care for their equipment properly.
Concussion Protocol
Head injuries are a serious concern in youth sports, and we take them very seriously. All coaches are trained through the CDC’s HEADS UP program to recognize the signs of concussion, and we follow strict “Return to Play” protocols for any player suspected of having a head injury. Any athlete suspected of a concussion will be removed from play immediately and may not return until cleared by a healthcare professional.
Heat & Hydration Management
Practices and games are scheduled with weather conditions in mind. We take steps to minimize the risks of heat-related illnesses by providing frequent water breaks and shaded areas for rest. Our coaches are trained to recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke and are ready to act if a player becomes overheated.
Stretching & Warm-Up Routines
Injury prevention starts before the game or practice even begins. We incorporate dynamic stretching and warm-up exercises into every practice session to ensure players’ muscles are prepared for the physical activity ahead. This helps reduce the risk of strains, sprains, and other common injuries.
Focus on Proper Techniques
In football, improper tackling techniques can lead to unnecessary injuries. Our coaches emphasize safe tackling methods that reduce impact to the head and neck areas, as well as encourage sportsmanship and respect for fellow players. Cheerleading routines are also taught with a focus on safety, ensuring that all stunts and tumbling are performed within the skill level of the athletes.
Emergency Response Plan
In the event of an injury, our coaching staff is trained in first aid. We have first aid kits readily available at all practices and games, and an emergency response plan is in place to handle more serious incidents should they occur. We also encourage parents to share any relevant medical information, such as allergies or medical conditions, with our coaching staff to ensure we are prepared. EMS personnel are on-site for all football games – both home and away.
Ongoing Education and Updates
Safety standards and best practices are constantly evolving. We stay updated on the latest research and recommendations from sports safety organizations and incorporate new techniques and protocols as they become available. Our commitment to player safety is a dynamic process, ensuring that we are always taking steps to protect our young athletes.
By making player safety a cornerstone of our program, we ensure that the Wyoming Valley Junior Spartans is a safe place for youth to learn, grow, and have fun. If you have any questions about our safety protocols, feel free to contact us.
